In late 2015, Fine Homebuilding Magazine asked me to design their first project house—one that would showcase good design, smart material choices and the best construction practices—in other words, Pretty Good House principles. Called the ProHome at the time, they later changed the name to the Fine Homebuilding House and the program has continued and expanded with many projects across the US.

I designed—in record time—a flexible, efficient floor plan and modern farmhouse exterior that would be appropriate for the site but also at home, with minor adjustments, in almost any location. Owner/builder, industry legend and nice guy Mike Guertin collaborated on the details and built the house, with very high quality, also in record time, with help from his local vocational students. Architect Pam Unwin-Barkley worked with Mike Guertin on the interior finishes to create a pleasing, contemporary feel.
